@wsj thinks @hasandpiker is "Chinamaxxing" and that Americans liking China's trains is Chinese soft power, or even propaganda. I'm a British man who lives in Switzerland. I have no dog in this fight. Here's my honest review of China from Beijing. Verdict: it's pretty good. Genuinely quite similar to Italy. Great history, great food, good tourism, high speed rail that works, cities that broadly function. The fintech is fine but clunkier than the internet thinks (Alipay is a QR code and a wait, not paying with your face). The admin is tough. In short: it's alright. It does a lot of things well, and plenty of normal things are meh. The American response to any comment about China doing something well is that it must be propaganda. Not really. They just build stuff fast and have nice trains. It's the same with Europe. Americans joke that Europeans are lazy and the continent is in perpetual decline. Not really. They just have good holiday leave from good labour bargaining power. I think a lot of this is that ordinary things look like magic from America. Working fintech looks like wizardry in a country that took fifteen years to adopt contactless. Medicine that doesn't bankrupt you sounds like heaven where medical debt is a leading cause of bankruptcy. An Italian taking August off seems baffling when your delivery driver is pissing in a bottle to make rate. Maybe China, to a European, just looks broadly normal. What looks like magic to you looks like the absence of a functional state and labour laws to us. My preferred political ideology is stealing.
