there’s nothing wrong with wearing a hearing aid to hear. It’s there to help you just like the same way people were glasses :) honestly just go for it trust me it’s more beneficial and people genuinely won’t think less of you. glasses and hearing aids are cool!!

It’s definitely an adjustment so don’t be too hard on yourself for feeling weird about it but you’ll adapt to it - honestly you’ll get a good gage of when to wear and not it’s trial and error really. As you’re still under peads you might get an option over colours etc (I’m 26 and not been kicked off that yet). Also top tip have a packet of hearing aid batteries in every bag. In terms of metallic sounding and loudness it’s again trial and error thing but they generally have a volume button. Honestly your hair will probably cover them so unless you tell people they probs won’t know.

I’ve worn hearing aid since I was four ( bilateral moderate to severe sensineural) and It will sound absolutely horrific at first, but you HAVE to stick with it. It will probably feel like every S and T is screaming at you but you will get used to it. Also, they will probably mention an FM system to you for sixth form, hearing aids amplify everything so it might be difficult to hear teachers, an FM system is basically a direct microphone. I absolutely adore you and you are my constant motivation as a 2027 med applicant. If you have any questions we’re all here for you [Red heart]

I have bilateral hearing aids and went through sixth form with them. I am a paramedic student and I have a stethoscope that is Bluetooth connected it's so cool. Different and an adjustment but cool. When you go to Uni definitely get DSA so you can buy a radio aid! The teacher wears it and it's so helpful. Background noise is the worst thing with hearing aids especially in places like a lecture hall, so it's so helpful x

I have pretty much the exact same hearing issues as you and I got my hearing aids in year 11 and I’ll be real the hearing aids are gonna possibly suck to start with for a while. I really didn’t like how loud it was when i first started wearing them and I was super self-conscious of people realising I had them on but now that I’ve had them for a while I honestly forget they’re there when I’ve had them in for more than 10 minutes and I don’t think I’ve ever once had anyone comment on them. The most important thing especially with school is to advocate for yourself as much as you can and I personally found using a microphone that I gave to my teachers helped me so much in class. If you ever have any questions feel free to ask!

You’ll do great! My 10yo loves her hearing aids and just needs a break from them after school. Some places, like supermarkets and cafés, are a bit loud for her, but other than that, it’s just part of her ❤️

Hi Kate, I've worn hearing aids since i was 5, and I've just started my fourth year of my pharmacy degree. If you ever have any questions please feel free to message. I think on the uni front just be slightly careful about moving fron pedriatric audiology to adults as the equipment the DSA will supply you with will fit one model type and if you change hearing aid type/brand it won't all connect.

Hi Kate if anything might help maybe see if you can voice record your classes and then you can play the recording back later and focus on it better or for some I know that the apps can create transcripts for you? Idk if that will help but hope your journey goes well 🥰

As someone who wears hearing aids, it will be uncomfortable and scratchy and u will wonder if they’re sitting right - they are. U will think the wind is annoyingly loud and ur hair. But it does get easier and u will forget their in eventually x

i was given hearing aid, not a fitting and i had no idead how to use them and i am a massive procrastinator to the point i never took them out the box and i have no idea where they are i think my mum (a nurse but i am now no contact) even kept them and repurposed them and idk cause i suffer with the symptoms of what i have but like i feel like it doesn't justify hearing aids and its so backwards because i would benifit from them and if someone else was telling me about this id advice them to use them but what can u do 😭. I am actually going to go boots hearing and ask them about this and if not a gp

2nd year medical student here, i had my hearing aids fitted in april and they’ve honestly been revolutionary in helping with my learning and my placements but also in my personal and social life. i’ve had so much support from my university and dsa and will be getting the littman eko stethoscope which connects to your phone and allows you to listen through your hearing aids meaning you can still communicate effectively with patients during an exam. it is obviously an adjustment and sometimes nothing feels better than taking your hearing aids out at the end of the day but i promise that they are worth it and they will help you thrive.
