I’ve struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I’ve blamed myself for most of it. I’ve also blamed PMOS/PCOS. Then I flew to Copenhagen and heard a doctor explain — in plain science — why none of it was ever just about willpower. It’s far more complicated and far more complex just like the human that’s going through it. As Asians we are so quick to comment and to judge on a persons physical appearance, how they look, how they should feel and what remedies they should try. But often enough these comments become the downfall of that persons entire road to recovery. The stigma, the judgment we all face is far more dangerous than the disease itself. I always get asked, how do I support my loved ones or how do I even begin? Knowing that everyone’s process, medical struggles, life challenges are all different and complicated, is the first step. Just doing this, is the purest form of care and if your understanding about the stigma that surrounds weight loss and how difficult it is and show some kindness, you can support your loved ones and encourage them to seek help from healthcare professionals.
