@lapoowic: 🇺🇬 PRESIDENT OBOTE’S HISTORIC BUSHENYI SPEECH A historic moment in Uganda’s political history: On 27 May 1980, Apollo Milton Obote addressed a massive gathering at Ishaka, Bushenyi, following his return from exile. The speech was broadcast live on Radio Uganda. In the speech, Obote reflected on the suffering Uganda had experienced under Idi Amin, mourned those who had lost their lives, and called for national unity, peace, reconstruction and the protection of democratic institutions. Interestingly, 27 May was celebrated as Heroes Day during the Obote II period (1980–1985), and later became associated with what some UPC sources call “Bushenyi Day.” A powerful piece of Uganda’s political history.
