Jefferson Fisher says always being nice and people pleasing won't get you very far, and that disappointing someone is a matter of growth. It's hard because everybody is a recovering people pleaser. Psychologist Harriet Braiker gave the pattern a name in her book The Disease to Please. The habit feels like kindness but runs on fear of what happens when someone is upset with you.
