@drbeckyatgoodinside: I have good news for you. Being a parent really comes down to just two jobs: setting a boundary, validating the feeling. That's it. Nobody tells you that setting a boundary isn't a one time event you get right and then move on from. It's the same blocks, the same five year old, the same moment, probably tomorrow, and the day after that, and you doing the same two jobs all over again. I used to take that repetition personally, like if my kid needed the boundary again, I must have done something wrong the first time. Now I think about it differently. The repetition is the work. That's what's actually building the skill, for both of us, one wash, one rinse, one repeat at a time. So if you're on day thirty of the same blocks fight, you're not behind. You're right on schedule. This is exactly why I built my boundaries program. It includes video lessons, scripts, and practical guides that walk you through both jobs so they actually start to stick, not just for one hard moment but for the next thirty. Enroll now and you'll also get access to my live workshop on September 23 at 11am ET, plus the replay so you can watch anytime. You can learn more at the link in my bio.

How do we do this with older kids? 9 year old twin boys - and specifically how do we set boundaries over what they can say and not say? Swear words, I hate you, etc etc.

When does this start? At what age? How do you boundary set with a small baby who doesn’t understand you?

I know this answer will change with the child's age, but how long until the child can play with blocks again? Mine is almost 4

“If you swing your broom again I will…?” “Take it away!” And then 75% of the time he swings it anyway. I notice him watching me like a hawk to see if I will do it or not, so I always always follow through. Just 100 more reps and we’ll have it lol

What happens when you have a kid that doesn’t calm down eventually and just escalates and spirals?

Pleaseee what to do while they calm down??? My 2yo can vomit from crying when she’s that upset and I don’t know what to do.. should I calm her? Help her? Obviously I’m not moving the boundary… but what do I do while she’s shedding tears like her whole village was annihilated

& the best part is if you stick firm by this from day 1 everything becomes easier for both you and your child !! they will know how you lead what to expect and you while you work your best to not display that your disappointed in them , upset or frustrated ! your regulation though it means they can trust you and your decisions . ✨

Dr. Melanie - Psychologist :
As a psychologist, I think the tricky part is not turning validation into another way to get a child to stop being upset. “I know you wanted more time” can be true while the screen stays off and the tears continue. You don’t need their agreement to hold the boundary, and they don’t need to be happy about it to feel understood. Follow my page for more on boundaries, emotions, and letting go of parenting perfectionism 🤍

what is the best advice you can give to Gen x grandparents who have millennial children raising elementary and preschool children of their own. we as grandparents find it very difficult to understand why the grandkids are allowed to jump on furniture throw things and basically run the show. this is how they are being parented. the problem is when they come to our house we have rules. the kids are not allowed to stand on the furniture or jump off of the furniture. they are not allowed to throw toys. and they have to listen. we are very loving grandparents and think the world of these little kids. but basically the inmates are running the asylum when they are at home and then they don't understand why there are rules at our house. when everyone is at our house and the parents are around we try very hard to just let the parents do the parenting. generally we don't step in, but if the parents aren't around and we are in charge we definitely make sure the kids understand that it is unacceptable to jump off the furniture and throw toys. it's extremely difficult for us as the grandparents to watch this. we categorize all of this under the giant umbrella of gentle parenting but I almost feel like it might be what's called permissive parenting. all we know is Gen xers is that that behavior is unacceptable. they don't understand "no". how do we be good grandparents to the little ones and not step on the toes of our millennial children?
