Vasco da Gama · Lisbon – St Helena Bay – Mossel Bay – Mozambique – Malindi – Calicut – Terceira – Lisbon · 8 July 1497 – 29 August 1499 In 1497, Vasco da Gama sailed from Restelo, outside Lisbon, for India. King Manuel I gave him the São Gabriel, the São Rafael under his brother Paulo da Gama, the caravel Berrio under Nicolau Coelho, and a storeship. From the Cape Verde Islands the fleet swung wide into the South Atlantic. It saw no land for 93 days and anchored in St Helena Bay on 7 November. Gama was wounded there by a Khoikhoi spear. The ships rounded the Cape on 22 November. At Mossel Bay the storeship was broken up, and on Christmas Day they named a coast Natal. At the Quelimane River scurvy struck and the fleet rested 32 days. The sultan of Mozambique turned hostile when he learned they were Christians. At Mombasa prisoners tortured with boiling oil revealed a plan to take the ships. The sultan of Malindi was friendly and gave Gama a pilot for the Arabian Sea. On 20 May 1498 the fleet anchored off Calicut. A convict sent ashore met 2 men from Tunis and told them the Portuguese had come in search of Christians and spices. The ruler, the Samudri (Zamorin), received Gama on 28 May. Merchants laughed at his gifts and trade was poor. Gama left on 29 August with hostages. Sailing against the monsoon, the crossing back to Africa took nearly 3 months and 30 men died of scurvy. Near Tanga the São Rafael was burned for lack of crew. The Berrio reached Lisbon first, on 10 July 1499. Gama took his dying brother to Terceira in the Azores, buried him there, and reached Lisbon at the end of August. Why it matters: this was the first voyage from Europe to India by sea. Portugal built a trading empire in the Indian Ocean on the route within 20 years. #vascodagama #History #maps #exploration #onthisday
