in 360 BCE Plato’s story of Atlantis appears mainly in two dialogues, Timaeus and Critias, He presents Atlantis as a powerful island civilization that existed thousands of years before his own time, supposedly around 9,000 years before Solon, an Athenian lawgiver. According to Plato, the story came to the Greeks through Egyptian priests, who told Solon that Athens had once fought a massive war against the Atlanteans. Atlantis was described as an extraordinarily wealthy and technologically advanced kingdom located beyond the “Pillars of Heracles,” generally associated with the Strait of Gibraltar. The island was ruled by Poseidon, according to the story, who divided the land among his sons. His eldest son, Atlas, became the first king, and the island was named Atlantis after him. Plato describes Atlantis as having enormous natural resources, fertile farmland, exotic animals, magnificent buildings, temples, bridges, canals, and a huge system of concentric rings of land and water surrounding the central city. At the center stood a spectacular temple dedicated to Poseidon, decorated with gold and other precious materials. Over generations, however, the Atlanteans became increasingly greedy, proud, and militaristic. Plato says that they eventually attempted to conquer other lands, including Athens. The Athenians, in Plato’s account, courageously resisted Atlantis even though they were greatly outnumbered. Eventually, the Atlanteans were defeated, but then a catastrophic disaster struck: earthquakes and floods overwhelmed Atlantis, causing the island and its armies to disappear into the sea in a single day and night of destruction.
