I've always said Shane was before his time and right got the wrong reasons. Shane was too willing to leave people behind and when those people got back that is when Rick become the leader because who wants a leader who will leave you without trying. he was right about safety and training everyone and not taking changes but like Andria said, it's not what you say it's how you say it

Well yeah everyone says he had the right mentality just too early. He was loosing his mind due to his obsession with Lori and Carl (even though I only think he liked Carl cause he was just there), his ego was hurt after Rick showed up filling the roll as leader which was the start of him loosing his mind, and then killing Otis is what damaged his mind so much he started to be destructive. So idk I think he would’ve died either way cause if he went on his own way he might’ve ended up like Morgan and gotten killed by someone (ik he was trying to leave earlier in season 2 but I think that was a manipulation tactic for Lori) or if Rick never came back the whole group would’ve died in fort benning since it was lost,
