The Story Behind the Song: Lakeside -
The Story Behind the Song: Lakeside - "Say Yes" Everybody knows Lakeside can throw a party. These are the cats who dressed up like pirates and took us on a "Fantastic Voyage." But here they slow it all the way down. The lights go soft, the strings swell, and the funk soldiers from Dayton, Ohio turn into a choir of lovesick gentlemen. Dayton in the '70s was a funk capital. Ohio Players, Slave, Zapp, Sun… something in that water. Lakeside came up in those clubs, moved out to L.A., and landed at Dick Griffey's SOLAR Records, where they got to write and produce their own music. In 1980, that freedom gave us Fantastic Voyage: a Gold album and R&B chart sensation. Tucked inside was this gem, written by drummer Fred Alexander Jr. and guitarist Stephen Shockley. Fred was the band's heartbeat for nearly 50 years. He famously played drums barefoot, and his bandmates called him "the backbone" of the group. We lost him this year at 72. So when you hear "Say Yes," remember: the same hands that laid down that funk could also write a love song this tender. Listen to how patient it is. No rush, no flash. Gene Dozier's strings drape over the groove like velvet curtains, the harmonies stack up warm and close, and the whole band leans in like they're asking one question and holding their breath for the answer. It's a funk band showing you its heart. -Bluegroove 💙🎶 #music #History #80s #funk #story Soul / R&B / Funk / Quiet Storm
