A generator produces direct current using a spinning coil inside a fixed magnetic field, with brushes and a commutator switching the output so it always flows one way. An alternator spins a magnetic field inside stationary coils instead, so it makes alternating current, which gets rectified to DC by diodes. That’s why alternators replaced generators on cars fewer moving parts to wear out, better output at low engine speed, and no brushes to replace. On equipment like tractors or ATVs, “generator” usually means the old brushed style, while “alternator” is the modern diode-rectified one.
