This is a somewhat vulnerable post so please no comments on my bedhead or Peppers bedhead lol. I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia in 2023 but have experienced debilitating symptoms since I was at least a preteen. This disorder causes me to experience sleep inertia, sleep drunkenness, sleep paralysis, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and brainfog, do automatic behaviors like talk, text, and get ready in my sleep with no recollection, and makes it miserable and impossible for me to wake up even after 12+ hours of sleep. It has made people responsible for waking me up have to get very creative and bear with me being irrationally angry at them the second my eyes open. It made me late to school, appointments, and plans so regularly that I eventually learned to stop making any kind of commitment before noon, because it was too risky i’d sleep through it. It has made getting through a normal day feel like the most exhausting and draining task in the world. For the longest time, I thought I would never be able to live alone because I relied so heavily on someone else waking me up and being around to keep me awake. My life looks totally different because of my service dog Pepper. Not only does she wake me up in the morning completely on her own, but she has also learned to sense and catch me getting sleepy through the day and alert me to get up before it takes over. She also helps me save spoons (energy) and get through brain fog with tasks like item retrieval, returning dropped items to my hand, opening and closing doors and drawers, and more. I’ve gone from only being able to stay awake for a few hours to being able to get through a full 10-12 hour day because of her. While my service dog doesn’t cure my sleep disorder, her tasks definitely aid in symptom management and have given me so much independence. Just wanted to share Pepper’s work for any fellow sleepyheads! 💤 #idiopathichypersomnia #sleepdisorderservicedog #servicedog #sleepdisorder #tasktrained
