What I did from undergrad to getting my PhD. The name of the game was experience. I did as much research as I could, not because grad school was the goal, but because I really enjoyed it and couldn’t get enough! One thing I forgot to mention is that at the end of my sophomore year I upgraded my psychology minor to double major. Neuropsychology is my first love, so naturally I started doing psychological research as well during that time. Soooo as an undergraduate student I had many hours of research under my belt in neuroscience and psychology. Honestly, both labs sharpened me in different ways. In neuro I found my passion and curiosity. In psych, my research mentor drilled proper research methods into my head. I credit her, to this day, with teaching me how to ask a great question and design the best possible experiments to answer it. Following that was PREP at Johns Hopkins. At the Lieber Institute specifically. This was a life changing experience for me. I knew my undergrad research was slower paced because it was more of a teaching university. PREP taught me what it meant to be at a research focused institution. Our program was structured to feel like the first 1-2 years of a PhD program while doing research full time. There I gained my independence and even started learning how to write grants. Then I applied and got into grad school, and now I’m here! It’s important for me to mention that upon graduating I was fortunate enough to be a co-author on 3 publications. I was fortune to have amazing mentors that wrote me amazing letters of recommendation, and all of them also help me draft a personal statement that I am so proud of. All of these offset a less than stellar GPA! Remember that everyone’s journey to their goals is unique and special! Follow your heart and do what excites you! #nurisneuronook
