My daughter-in-law never let anyone undress my grandson for nine months — On Halloween, she left him alone with me for the first time, and I finally had a chance to find out what she'd been hiding. My daughter-in-law never let anyone undress my grandson for nine months — On Halloween, she left him alone with me for the first time, and I finally had a chance to find out what she'd been hiding. She kept my grandson covered from his neck to his toes since the day he was born. Even in the middle of summer, she'd put him in these little footed onesies with sleeves that covered his hands. "He's always cold, Linda. Please don't undress him." That's what she'd tell me every time I offered to help. He's nine months old now, and I can count on one hand how many times I've held him. She never let me change his diaper, give him a bath, or even help get him dressed. I thought she was just an overprotective first-time mom. Then Halloween came… Around 6 p.m., my son texted that he and his wife had been invited to a Halloween party and needed me to watch the baby for a few hours. Before I could even reply, another message popped up. "We're outside. Can you come get him? We're running late." By the time I opened my front door, their car was already pulling away. My grandson was sitting in his infant car seat on the porch, dressed in a thick little pumpkin costume. There it was again. Her note — "Linda, please do not take off his costume. He gets cold." I carried him inside, took him out of the car seat, and tried to settle him on my lap. But within minutes, he started crying. Not his usual little fussing. He was screaming, kicking his legs, and twisting away whenever I tried to hold him. I offered him his bottle. I walked around the living room with him. Nothing helped. His little face was getting red, and the back of his neck felt damp. "Sweetheart, you're probably roasting in this thing," I whispered. I looked at the note on the coffee table. Then I looked at my grandson. It was warm inside, and I couldn't understand why a baby needed to be bundled up like that. So I laid him on a blanket and reached for the zipper on his costume. I pulled it down just a few inches. Then I stopped. There was something underneath that my daughter-in-law had never once mentioned to me. And when I carefully pulled the fabric aside to get a better look — I immediately reached for my phone. See less
