@memoria.paganorum: AND THE ANSWER IS: A DWARF! Gandálfr appears among the names of dwarves in the Völuspá, an Old Norse poem preserved in the Poetic Edda. J.R.R. Tolkien borrowed the name for his famous wizard in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Several dwarf names from The Hobbit, including Thorin, Dwalin and Durin, also appear in the same ancient poem. The original Gandálfr is only named in the poem. We don't have a detailed story about him like we do about Tolkien's Gandalf. Gandálfr he was and elf with a staff or roughly translated as Staff elf from the poem Völuspá

Præma :
Alf means elf, Gand means staff or wand. Gandalf literally translates as Wand-elf, but in truth he is very much a nod to Odin, who "wand"ered 😉 the earth as a wise man with a long beard, wearing a tall hat and carrying long walking stick. Odin and Gandalf both had knowledge of the past and future and sought to lead others to fight against the darkness for a more favorable outcome for the world. Gandalf was also know as Mithrandir, meaning Grey pilgrim, a clear parallel to Odin in name here. Tolkien was a great student of Norse and Finnish mythos and language. Many if not all of the names of the Dwarves in The Hobbit are taken directly from the sagas. There are numerous other allusions to those traditions in his works as well, but it would take some time to list them all here. ✨️🧙🏽♂️🎅🏿🗡💍✨️

In Norse mythology, he actually would not have been anything you would’ve been considered a wanderer of God wandering the Earth. In Norse mythology elves actually did not exist dwarfs did. Dragons or technically dragons that were not a representative of any type of person. In a spoon, was there to eat.
