@theultraexpat: 🇩🇪 10 German workplace habits that totally surprised me as a Nigerian 🇳🇬 1️⃣ You’re allowed to date your boss In Nigeria, corporate policies (especially in banking) often require one partner to resign or transfer if a relationship develops. In Germany, your love life is legally private. Dating colleagues or even your manager is generally fine. 2️⃣ No “African Time” If a meeting is set for 10:00, you are expected to be online or in the room by 09:58. 3️⃣ We’re all on a first-name basis In Nigeria, addressing a senior as “Sir,” “Ma,” or Mr/Mrs + last name is standard respect. Imagine my shock when my first CEO introduced himself simply as “Chris.” 4️⃣ Overtime doesn’t mean you’re a hustler In Germany, constantly working late signals poor time management or an unrealistic workload. 5️⃣ Loooong maternity & parental leaves In Nigeria, maternity leave is often capped at 3 months max. In Germany, parents can take extended parental leave (Elternzeit) for up to 3 years to care for their children while keeping their job secured. 6️⃣ Strict off-duty boundaries Unless there is a critical system breakdown, sending work emails or WhatsApp messages after working hours, on weekends, or on public holidays is considered unprofessional and invasive. 7️⃣ Lunch break is NOT paid Lunch breaks in Nigeria are often calculated as part of your total workday. In Germany, lunch is deducted from your hours. 8️⃣ Direct feedback isn’t a personal jab Germans give feedback straight to the point. It can feel harsh or blunt at first, but it is purely focused on the work, not an attack on your character. 9️⃣ We actually take ALL our vacation days Taking your full 20–30 days of annual leave to completely unplug is not seen as lazy. It is expected for your mental health and productivity. 🔟 It’s okay to disagree with your manager German workplaces welcome open debate and alternative opinions, regardless of your seniority level. 🇩🇪 Which work culture do you prefer?👇 #workingingermany #livingingermany #expatsingermany #nigerianingermany #nigerianindiaspora

Great overview but a bit of an over generalization. The reality is more nuanced.

uloakuehiemere :
Maternity leave in Nigeria isn't always limited to 3 months. Many organizations, including several state government sectors, offer 6 months, which can be extended if needed. When it comes to annual vacation, workers have a right to their full days, but many companies pay a cash bonus for unused leave. Because of this, most employees prefer taking the extra money at the end of the year, while others simply feel too intimidated to ask for their full time off.
