I MATTER MONDAY IS BACK! Who remembers these? 😊 After a little hiatus, we're thrilled to bring 'I Matter Monday' back- and there's no better horse to kick things off than with a very special gentle (soon to be) 'giant'...Leo! Every Monday, you'll meet one of the more than 200 rescued draft horses who call Gentle Giants home. Behind every face is a story worth telling, and we can't wait for you to get to know them, cheer them on, and fall in love with them just as we have. ❤️ A few weeks ago, we received a call from an Amish farmer who told us he had a Belgian colt who was only a few months old and that this colt had a crooked spine and 'didn't run around much'. This could have meant anything - was the foal paralyzed? Severely injured? Could he even physically handle the trailer ride home? The only way to find out was to go get him. Luckily, Leo made it home with no issues, and we discovered that while his spine is severely malformed, he isn't in any pain, isn't paralyzed, and this was not due to any injury or accident. Leo suffers from a (in his case, congenital) condition called 'kyphosis', commonly known as “roach back.” This incurable condition occurs when malformed vertebrae cause an upward arch of the spine. We have plenty of experience with kyphosis, but this is the first time we've seen such a severe case in a foal. Our veterinary team is planning to take X-rays of Leo's spine to get a baseline visual of what his spine actually looks like and identify any areas that may be a concern either now or in the future as he grows. Since Leo was born with kyphosis, there is a chance his condition will worsen as he matures. Luckily, he has an incredible team around him that is dedicated to making sure Leo has a happy, comfortable life. Babysitter Nibbles has been by Leo's side since the day he arrived, making sure he never had to face this big new world alone, and just last week, three young Belgian colts joined them, and now Leo has something every young horse deserves- a herd of friends to grow up with. اصعب شعور 🖤🥀 ليس اصعب شعور ان تفقد شخصا احببته، بل ان يبقى حاضرا في قلبك رغم غيابه. ان تستيقظ على ذكراه، وتمضي يومك وهو يرافق افكارك، وتنام على امل ان يخف الحنين قليلا، لكنه يعود في كل مرة اقوى مما كان. هناك اشخاص لا نستطيع نسيانهم مهما حاولنا. ليس لانهم كانوا مثاليين، بل لانهم كانوا جزءا من تفاصيلنا اليومية. كانوا الضحكة التي تسبق الفرح، والرسالة التي تضيء المساء، والصوت الذي يجعل الحياة اخف مما هي عليه. اصعب شعور ان تشتاق ولا تستطيع البوح، وان تحب ولا تستطيع الاقتراب، وان تحمل في قلبك كلاما كثيرا لا يجد طريقه الى من كان يوما كل الحكاية. تراقب الايام وهي تمضي، وتحاول اقناع نفسك ان كل شيء انتهى، لكن بعض المشاعر لا تعرف كيف تنتهي. ومع ذلك نبقى ممتنين لكل ذكرى جميلة، ولكل لحظة صادقة عشناها، لان بعض الاشخاص حتى بعد رحيلهم يتركون في ارواحنا اثرا لا تمحوه السنوات. فبعض الغياب لا يوجع لانهم رحلوا فقط، بل لان جزءا منا رحل معهم ولم يعد كما كان.
