In 1626 the Dutch West India Company purchased Manhattan island. For 60 guilders worth of trade goods — approximately $1,200 today. They built a settlement at the southern tip called New Amsterdam and a wooden wall across the island's north side to defend it. The road next to that wall: Wall Street. In 1664 an English fleet arrived and demanded the city. Governor Peter Stuyvesant wanted to fight. His citizens refused. They surrendered New Amsterdam without a battle. The Dutch received in exchange: Suriname and a nutmeg island in Indonesia. The most expensive trade in history — depending on which side you were on. The English renamed the city New York. After the Duke of York. But the Dutch names stayed. Brooklyn comes from 'Breukelen.' Harlem from 'Haarlem.' The Bronx from Dutch settler Jonas Bronck. Broadway from 'Breede Weg' — Broad Way. Bowery from 'Bouwerij' — farm. And the words stayed too. Cookie: from 'koekje.' Coleslaw: from 'koolsla.' Boss: from 'baas.' Yankee: from Dutch 'Janke.' Santa Claus: entirely from 'Sinterklaas.' Every time an American says 'boss' or eats a cookie: they're speaking Dutch. The Dutch had Manhattan for 40 years. They've been gone for 360. But if you live in Brooklyn — you live in Breukelen. The name they gave it in 1646. #History #dutch #newyork #manhattan #amsterdam
