@windy_willows_homestead: The bloom on chicken eggs is amazing! 🥚 This was one of the heaviest-bloomed eggs we’ve had this year, so fun to get creative with it! Here are some facts: The bloom, also called the cuticle, is a natural protective coating added to the shell right around the time the hen lays her egg. Eggshells are covered in thousands of microscopic pores, and the bloom helps cover those pores and makes it harder for bacteria to get inside. Bloom can be almost invisible, or it can be so heavy that it changes the appearance of the egg; sometimes making a brown egg look dusty, pinkish, purplish, or even gray. And because it’s a surface coating, you can sometimes gently brush or rub portions of a heavy bloom away, revealing the shell color underneath—which is exactly what I’m doing here! Basically… the hen did the painting first. I’m just adding the design. 🐓🎨🥚 #EggBloom #ChickenEggs #BackyardChickens #ChickenTok #Homestead
