@thesunnahguy: One of the most exhausting ways to live is believing everything people do is somehow about you. Someone doesn’t reply... “They’re ignoring me.” Someone doesn’t invite you... “They clearly don’t like me.” Someone speaks differently... “I knew they had an issue with me.” And before you know it, you’ve created an entire story in your head about someone based on something they might not have even noticed. As I’ve got older, I’ve realised how much peace there is in simply giving people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they forgot. Maybe they’re tired. Maybe something happened at home. Maybe they’re dealing with something they haven’t told anybody about. Or maybe they genuinely made a mistake. Not everything requires an investigation. Not every interaction needs to be analysed. And not everybody has some hidden negative intention towards you. Obviously, this doesn’t mean becoming naive or ignoring patterns of bad behaviour. But there’s a difference between recognising someone’s character over time and constantly assuming the worst about people. Allah tells us: “Avoid much suspicion, for indeed some suspicion is sin.” (Qur’an 49:12) Thinking well of people doesn’t just protect your relationships. It protects your own heart. Because the person you constantly assume the worst about might be completely fine... While you’re the one carrying the resentment around all day. Give people grace. Make excuses for them where you can. And don’t allow assumptions about somebody else’s intentions to steal your own peace.
