@trustaskavet: Something every dog owner should know about, even though it's not the most comfortable topic. 🐾 When a male dog's penis comes out of its protective sheath and can't retract, that's called paraphimosis. It can happen from trauma, prolonged exposure, or swelling that traps the tissue outside. Left untreated, it can cut off blood supply and the tissue can become necrotic. What we do in clinic: apply concentrated dextrose or hypertonic saline directly to the swollen tissue. The sugar draws out the fluid causing the swelling, which makes it possible to gently push everything back into place, as long as blood supply hasn't been compromised for too long. The key takeaway: this is an emergency, not a wait and see situation. The longer it's left, the higher the risk of the tissue dying, and in bad cases, surgery becomes the only option. If you ever notice this on your dog, get to a vet immediately. 🌐 askavet.com 📱 get.askavet.com 🐶 woopf.com 🐱 purrz.com 🐾 @drduncanthevet @trustaskavet @woopffordogs @purrzforcats General veterinary education, not a substitute for advice about your individual pet. #VetTips #DogHealth #VetMed #DogEmergency #PetHealth
