I don't remember the manga/anime but the light novel states that she didn't have any choice in the matter and that due to the army's need for air mages, they don't care about a drafting age limit.

Exactly. Tanya joined the army on her own because, in her eyes, it was the best way. She chose this path herself because it really was the most logical one. If she hadn’t been a volunteer, no one would have known about her powers — they couldn’t test everyone in the country for magic. Moreover, Tanya chose such a logical path that the whole idea being X of “putting Tanya in a bad world so she would worship it” went out the window. And that’s precisely why Being X invaded the world and pulled all this nonsense with the scientist. If Being X’s plan was to manipulate Tanya into joining the army, then why, when his “plan” worked he literally intervene in the world’s affairs directly? This happened only because Tanya refused to do what Being X wanted her to do, and decided to risk her life in the army. She decided to do it on her own, and when everything went according to Tanya’s plan and things got better, being X literally interfered in her life, making everything worse directly. Because his idea of making Tanya suffer didn’t work, since she decided to join the army instead of starving like an orphan. (I really like that we’re talking about this anime, keep it up!)
