ELISABET BRIEGER. I found her at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop. November 7, 1870. June 26, 1871. Seven months and nineteen days, recorded on a small marker that gives us almost nothing else. I wanted to find something that belonged to her beyond those dates. Eventually, I reached a newspaper memorial published in 1910, nearly thirty-nine years after her passing. It described Charles Brieger’s marriage to Mary Nink and their ten children: “all boys, except one girl who died in infancy.” One girl. The family tree identifies that daughter as Elizabeth, born in 1870 and lost in 1871. Her years match this marker. Together, those records make Charles and Mary very likely Elisabet’s parents. I haven’t found a baptism or burial entry that names them with her, so I need to leave that small but important uncertainty here. But think about what that newspaper preserved. Decades had passed. The sons had grown up. They had lives in different towns. Yet when someone put their father’s life into words, the little daughter still had a place in it. The account could have listed only the children who reached adulthood. Instead, it made room for her. I wish it had given her name. I wish I could tell you where she was born, what made her smile, or why her life ended so early. I don’t know those things. There is no kindness in filling the silence with something I made up. What I can do is bring these pieces together: the daughter remembered in an old newspaper, the name preserved here in Bastrop, and the questions that still deserve answers. Elisabet. You don’t need to have accomplished something for your absence to matter. You don’t need years of memories to be worth remembering. Seven months and nineteen days were her whole life. Today, we can give her a little of our time.
