For months, I neglected me. I gained 11kg from eating hospital food, sitting beside Matty’s bedside every day and barely moving my body. And honestly? I felt guilty about investing in myself — both financially and with my time. How could I spend money on a gym? How could I take time away to train? There was always something more important. Something Matty needed. But then I realised something… Matty needs a strong mum. Not just emotionally strong. Not just mentally strong. Physically strong, too. I need to be strong enough to pick him up. To carry him. To hold him for as long as he needs me. And to keep loving and carrying him as he gets bigger and heavier. So I’ve decided to train. Not because I hate my body. Not because I need to “get my old body back.” And not because I owe anyone weight loss. I’m doing this because I want to be strong. For me, as much as I’m doing it for him. This is my journey back to myself. A journey to get stronger — physically, mentally and emotionally. And if you’re a medical mum reading this… You are allowed to take care of yourself too. Taking care of you doesn’t mean you’re taking anything away from your child.
