@uoescots: The University of Edinburgh has announced plans to cut 90 academic courses by 2027, mainly targeting language and culture courses - including Scottish and Gaelic studies. The University has justified these proposals, asserting £140 million will be saved by the cuts. However, critics have described the cuts as ‘cultural vandalism’ and ‘disgraceful’. The UCU has threatened strike action as many academic jobs will be eliminated once the plan is implemented. Furthermore, it is pointed out that UoE continues to invest in multinational corporations, including surveillance technology, while putting courses on the chopping block. The Vice Chancellor Sir Peter Mathieson has previously come under scrutiny for his attempts to make thousands of staff redundant while enjoying a lucrative salary and complimentary residence. When questioned by MSP Douglas Ross during a Scottish Parliament committee hearing, Mathieson was unable to recall his exact salary, with critics describing him as out of touch. The Senatus Academicus previously passed a non-binding motion of no confidence in Mathieson’s financial leadership, citing a lack of transparency and little evidence to support claims of a budget deficit. Edinburgh UCU is currently forming the Student-Staff Assembly, a forum for staff and students to pressure the University administration to reverse its decision. As thousands of students, staff, and faculty members go into the academic year in limbo about their future, will Mathieson and University leadership reverse their proposals, or push them through against the general wishes of the community? #edinburghuni #uoe #scottishstudents #budgetcuts #humanities
