@borntoserve07: Sometimes burnout isn’t the first thing you notice. Sometimes the first thing you notice is that you can’t remember the last time you were simply YOU. There is a part of caregiving we don’t talk about enough. You can disappear inside the role without ever realizing you are disappearing. It doesn’t happen on Tuesday at 2:00 and somebody announces, “Today you’re going to lose yourself.” No. It happens quietly. You stop going somewhere because somebody needs you. You cancel an appointment because there’s nobody to cover. You say, “I’ll eat later.” “I’ll rest tomorrow.” “I don’t need help.” “It’s easier if I just do it myself.” And every one of those decisions seems small at the time. Until one day, you realize you have become very good at taking care of everybody except the person carrying the whole load. You. I can speak about this because I lived it. After 17 years in caregiving, one of the hardest things I had to understand was that being dependable did not mean I had to be endlessly available. Being capable did not mean every responsibility belonged to me. Loving the people I cared for did not require me to disappear. And taking care of myself did not mean I cared about them any less. That lesson took me a long time. I had to learn boundaries. I had to learn that no is a complete answer sometimes. I had to learn that an off day should actually mean off. I had to learn that rest is not something you earn after you have completely exhausted yourself. Most importantly, I had to separate who I am from what I do. I am a caregiver. But I am also a woman with dreams, needs, relationships, laughter, plans, purpose, and a life that deserves attention too. And maybe somebody reading this needs to hear that today: You do not have to stop caring for someone else to start coming back to yourself. Coming back may begin very small. One boundary. One uninterrupted lunch. One afternoon that belongs to you. One appointment you stop postponing. One honest “I need help.” One decision that says: I matter in this story too. 💜 Caregiver, I want you to finish this sentence in the comments: “Somewhere along the way, I stopped ________.” And if you’re not ready to share it publicly, just answer it quietly for yourself. Because sometimes finding yourself again begins with recognizing exactly where you started leaving yourself behind. #HealingForCaregivers #FollowMeAcrossTheBridge
