@azruddinmohamedofficial: The Leader of the Opposition, along with Members of Parliament Natasha Lewis and Vishnu Panday, met with scores of cane cutters from Blairmont Estate. The workers have now been on strike for eight days. Over 200 cane cutters are affected. The cane cutters complain about the estate manager, Sarwan, and about their union representation, MP Seepaul Narine. They stated that the union head, who is a Member of Parliament, is acting in the interest of his PPP master's rather than the workers. Workers reported being required to cut 4.6 tonnes of cane per day, approximately 10,141 pounds. In some instances they receive only half-day pay which is $2500 GYD. They described the target as extremely difficult to achieve because the land is less fertile, and longer distances must be covered to gather the required amount. Drinking water provided on the job is of poor quality. Many characterized the conditions as harsh and akin to modern-day slavery. WIN calls on the failed Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, to address these concerns and ensure that the grievances of the Blairmont cane cutters are resolved.
