@heyitspippin: Teaching dogs to be able to settle and using enrichment inside can come in handy! I have been so unwell the last few days so haven’t been able to walk the dogs properly but they’ve been fine because they’ve had stimulation inside and they know how to settle 🙌 #settletraining #dogsotiktok #labradorsoftiktok #dogtok #highenergydog
If I ever get sick my dog is happy to sit and sleep next to me for a couple of days because she gets plenty of stimulation the rest of the time.

My dog is my dog. If I’m not gonna walk her one day she knows why, another day we climb a mountain. Not bothered about the internet she’s my dog

the owner should be able to take the dog for a walk AT LEAST once a day.

Totally agree, sometimes the weather makes it unsafe or you are too unwell or need to do walks on a different schedule. It shouldn’t blow your dogs brain to miss one.

I understand what you’re saying and I own a border collie. Everyone with a high energy breed in the comments thinks it’s reasonable for their dog to fall apart behaviourally if they miss a day of exercise. It’s not reasonable!

Every dog has a different temperament and different needs. This is a stupid statement.

I don’t have a garden so yes, my dog 1000% needs a walk. Short ones sometimes yes, but owners who aren’t ready to walk in any circumstances shouldn’t have dogs.

Idk why people think a walk is the best and only way to exercise/enrich a dog. My dog gets perhaps 3-4 walks per week, these are usually 3-4km in the bush with lots of sniff stops. Around that we play fetch in the yard, do scent work and other forms of training. Some days when I’m exhausted we do nothing. Teaching them to settle is SO important. Not every dog is the same, and their needs will be different.

As a dog trainer, this is 1000% CORRECT!! You should train your dog to be okay with being bored and train them to be relaxed at all times. Dogs have the energy, but that doesn’t mean they have to release that energy every single day. They only need the exercise you give them every day. You take them on a run everyday they’ll get used to that and panic when they don’t get their run. It can create anxiety and stress too. It also teaches them that you’re in control.

Some people also aren’t ready for a conversation about how just bc you have a yard your dog still needs stimulation

People have told me I’m cruel for giving my 11 year old with severe arthritis rest days where she stays home and does brain training instead of being forced to walk when she’s in pain 🤷♀️

yes they can go without a walk but they shouldn't go without that's the difference. one hour a day that all it takes if you haven't got an hour for your dog a day you shouldn't have one

Difference between a small walk to do his business (Shiba don't go at home), a walk and a full blown hike. If we hike on a weekend, I rest Mika for a good few days after, only doing pee and sniff walks.

Yes! Once a week we have a rest day with our German shepherd where we do no walks, we play, do a bit of scentwork or training, and yogi has a big bone. It’s always been a part of his routine and he knows to switch off! It’s been so important especially as we have a young baby.

My dogs get long day walks through the bush walks and creeks on days I am able to take them. Otherwise they have 2 acres with their own creek to play in

Completely true. If the weather is super wet or snow she may not get a walk that day. But she will get her energy out herself, she doesn’t mind not going on a walk for a day or 2 (she is a cockapoo) and is more then happy to play at home and have a sleep and pets :)

Border Collie owner here - I completely agree. Enrichment and training exercises are just as important as physical. Learning the ‘off switch’ is the first thing I recommend to new owners of breeds like mine. (Assuming a garden is accessible at all times, for fresh air and toileting).

Totally. A truly fulfilled dog will be able to take a day off when needed without a meltdown. My high energy WL lab gets out everyday to do either trails or sport, but he also just spent two days at home with husband hanging out in the yard and garage with while he worked and I was away and was completely fine. If they are only every going once or twice around the block everyday that’s where the problem starts.
