Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking charges stemming from the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, telling the judge in his own words: “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died.” During Friday’s hearing, Mangione described researching UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference and traveling to Manhattan ahead of the shooting. He told the court he posed as an investor representing a firm managing more than $15 billion in assets to obtain information about the conference. Mangione ultimately acknowledged, “I knew what I was doing was illegal.” The guilty plea comes without a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, meaning the two sides have not agreed on what sentence Mangione should receive. The judge told Mangione he could face up to life in federal prison and warned that there is no parole in the federal system. Prosecutors say a sentence of approximately 292 to 365 months behind bars, or roughly 24 to 30 years, would be appropriate, but the judge stressed that she is not bound by that recommendation. Mangione’s sentencing is now scheduled for December 18. The federal plea does not automatically end his separate New York state case, where he still faces a second-degree murder charge. That trial is currently scheduled to begin September 8, though his attorneys could argue that the federal guilty plea should prevent the state prosecution from moving forward. The federal murder and weapons charges against Mangione were previously dismissed, eliminating the possibility of the death penalty in the federal case. Now, nearly two years after Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel, Mangione has admitted in open court that he pulled the trigger — but major questions remain about how much time he will serve and what happens to the state murder case next.
