The trial that follows barely discusses the killing. Instead, the prosecution builds its case on a different crime entirely. Meursault didn't weep at his mother's funeral. He smoked a cigarette beside her coffin. He started a love affair the day after burying her. The court isn't really trying a killer. It's trying a man who refuses to perform grief. Refuses to perform remorse. Refuses to lie about what he feels just to make everyone else comfortable. And he won't lie.
