Idk, one could argue that Rome as a concept boiled down to, “There’s Us and Them. We kill them and take their stuff, and sometimes kill us and take stuff.” sounds a lot like Crusades to me. Also picking emperors/popes from all over, huge senates/cardinals with complex politics, long periods of peace bookended with civil wars, terrible monetary policies, etc.
