@thepottymouthguru: Replying to @rags_by_the_dozen I think a lot of us confuse “this skill feels incredibly basic to me” with “nobody ever had to teach me this skill.” We grew up hearing phones ring in our houses. We answered them. We called friends. We overheard adults making appointments, calling businesses and dealing with all kinds of boring adulty shit. And even with all that exposure, somebody still had to teach us that calling your friend and calling a doctor’s office were two very different fucking conversations. Today’s teens grew up in a completely different communication environment. That doesn’t mean we lower the expectation that they learn these skills. It means we teach them, give them opportunities to practice, and then expect increasing independence. “I learned this so long ago that I don’t remember learning it” is not the same as “nobody taught me.” ❤️🤟🏻🌿 #UNFUCKYOURSELF #THEPOTTYMOUTHGURU #ParentingTeens #GenZ #TeenParenting
I find it sad that the same people who are saying "they should have known" are the same ones who are going to ask the kid how to use AI or even something as simple as passing photos from the tablet to their PC.
Everyone should have some understanding to help other people with problems that they are struggling with. And I am saying HELP, not doing the thing for them.

My comment on the original video was basically.... if that child wanted to learn those things while doing it under mom's roof mom would help her.... but because the mom isn't ready to let the child go , she's cutting off the source of knowledge. all you're really teaching your daughter. Is that if she has questions or needs help... she cannot come to you. if that child was twenty three in moving out for the first time... mom would drop her off and her new apartment , all teary eyed and give her a hug and say if you need anything , you call me... but this kid has her own timeline, and mom doesn't agree. So mom is cutting her off. it's bad parenting in my opinion.

Also we had to answer the home phone. Idk about you guys but my parents taught me how to answer with "Hello (name) speaking" and how to take a message or just talk to someone we didnt know. We didn't come out of the womb knowing how to have those conversations, they just happened to be part of our home lives so we got to be taught from a young age! No wonder younger gens are less confident on the phone. Them calling a business for the first time is LITERALLY the first home call they've ever had that wasnt with close friends or family.

My mum was big on letting me figure it out myself... after she taught me the basics, and then provided me a safe space to fail. I failed 100 times at things like phone calls before getting it right, but that is how I learn best. I am now able to do the thing, and also ok with failure and don't see it as a sign to give up.

i think often times people forget that kids know literally nothing until they are taught it. i remember being a kid and not nowing how to do anything, i had to be taught how to wash dishes and do the laundry and make phone calls... WE ALL DID! maybe its because we forget that we had to learn how to do everything, that people will take it out on kids. also fun fact our brains have a hard time recognizing that we are getting older (its why if you look at someone in junior high they look too young to be in junior high as well as why people continue to look for "an adult" even when they are in their 40's or later) that we sometimes forget how hard it was to learn every skill we now use on autopilot. I still remember the first time i had to learn how to make a phone call and asking my parents how to do that. also I thought the whole goal of raising your kids was so they had a better life/childhood than you did. wouldn't that include helping them figure out something important? even if you had to "figure it out yourself".

I have 2 Gen Z kids and 3 alpha gen kids. My Gen Z kids taught me I needed to up the ante, so I had a house phone, a landline phone installed to teach them. The alphas are under 12 and I am already aware that I will have to explicitly teach some of these skills. As my Gen Z needed a lot of coaching around the launch period - I had never n unaware of how many nuances they had missed. These skills are not saturated in their environment. Since then I have become a very deliberately “lazy mum” and always encouraged them to do more for themselves. I’m coded to just take care of things, so shifting gears has been extremely challenging. But 🤷🏼♀️Gen X adapts.

We had landlines that were usually in the kitchen or living room, we were used to listen to our parents/caregivers talking on the phone. I knew the "speech" because I heard my mom calling the doctor's office a million times.
Now, we all have personal phones and kids are not especially interested on what the grown ups are doing because the grown ups have been shushing them away since forever.
I am a teacher. I see it everyday.

So many people don't know how to talk on the phone. I take calls for work and a lot of the time it goes something like: "Hi, thanks for calling xx" "I wanna talk to my case manager" "sure and your name is? can I have your details so I can find who your case manager is?" *gets details* "looks like your case manager is unavailable, anything I can do to assist?"
I feel like I have to ask so many questions just to get to this point, I don't even get a hello most of the time. It's not just the kids! these are mostly adults

I remember my parents teaching me how to answer the phone and make phone calls. I taught my kids because I have noticed how many young people don't know how to do it at work. I have created Flow charts for new grad staff to use to learn how to answer the phone and direct calls

YESSS you're absolutely right!! They need to be taught, and we as parents need to learn patience, Grace, and to learn when the little wins matter. This is their first time being human just as it is our first time being parents... At this point we're all just flying at the seat of our pants. Buckle Up it's a bumpy ride!

Yeah they should, from being properly parented. Like writing formal emails & letters, phone calls properly for more formal things. All should be taught by parents. Making it 13yrs of schooling without bothering to do anything extra at home is wild😭

I will say children of immigrants are usually pretty good with phone calls since they usually have to for non English speaking parents.

I think we're staying too much at the surface. It's just plain obvious that it's impossible for children to know when they're not taught or modeled. Otherwise you're basically saying they knew it right from the moment they came out of the womb. Whoever says stuff like they should already know is just plain rude. Maybe even emotionally abusive. It's childism probably. Really not okay
