@shanell_oliver1: One of the league's founders, Henry Sylvester Williams, didn't stop at hockey. Five years after helping start the league, he organized the first Pan-African Conference in London in 1900, bringing together delegates from across the diaspora to demand political rights and challenge colonial rule. The league's innovations outlived the league itself. The slap shot and the butterfly-style goaltending save both trace back to these Black Maritime players, decades before the NHL formalized either one. Africville, the community that produced one of the league's most storied teams, was later demolished by the city of Halifax. The plaque now standing at the Africville Museum is one of the only physical markers left of a neighborhood the city erased. Follow the link in our bio for more stories like this on YouTube.
