In this installment of "On View," Nayland Blake welcomes us to Art Omi, in upstate New York, to visit their first outdoor installation, “Haunt: Being the Folly of One Victorya Spectre." The commission casts Blake’s alter ego, Victorya Spectre, in the world of the ornamental hermit, a novelty of the 18th and 19th centuries in which a wealthy landowner would hire a man to live alone in a humble dwelling on their estate in a performance of simpler life predating the Industrial Revolution. Spectre takes on the mysterious persona of a mythological figure like Bigfoot or the Mothman, emblematic of the magic and mischief found in the woods. “Victorya, in some ways, represents my attempt to explore notions of queer presence, of aging, of power that we might find in the overlooked,” Blake says.
