In a 2013 BBC documentary, young bottlenose dolphins were filmed gently passing a pufferfish between one another. Marine biologists proposed that the dolphins might have been deliberately provoking the fish to release small amounts of toxin, potentially producing a mild intoxicating effect. The dolphins appeared unusually calm and hovered near the surface afterward. However, this remains a hypothesis, not a proven fact. Scientists do not know whether the dolphins were: * intentionally seeking the toxin, * simply playing with an unusual object, * or investigating the fish out of curiosity. There is currently no conclusive scientific evidence that dolphins deliberately use pufferfish as a recreational drug. Why don’t dolphins die? Researchers speculate that: * Dolphins may handle the fish carefully enough to avoid a lethal dose. * The amount of toxin released during the interaction may be very small. * Dolphins may spit the fish out before receiving dangerous exposure. These ideas are plausible but have not been confirmed through controlled scientific studies. Fun facts * There are over 190 species of pufferfish worldwide. * Bottlenose dolphins can swim at speeds of about 20 mph (32 km/h), with short bursts even faster. * Pufferfish have fused teeth that form a strong beak, allowing them to crush shellfish and crustaceans. * Dolphins have been observed using tools, cooperating to hunt, and recognizing themselves in mirrors—behaviors associated with advanced intelligence. The dolphin–pufferfish interaction remains one of the ocean’s most intriguing mysteries, illustrating how much there is still to learn about dolphin behavior.
