"Pinocchio" started as a genuine surprise on the June 22, 2018 episode of the variety show "The Call," when Taemin teamed up with K-hip-hop artist BewhY to create the track live, on the spot. The idea was born from a casual conversation about Disney - Taemin mentioned he loved Pinocchio growing up, and BewhY suggested it as the perfect theme: someone who once felt innocent, but who - after years in the industry - learned to wear a mask and become someone else. Taemin later said it felt personal: "Sometimes I lie out of necessity, and I see myself getting better and better at it - now I feel like my lies even fool me. I wish people could see right through it." The choreography reflected that idea too, trading his usual sensual style for stiffer, wooden-doll-like movements - another mask, hiding the real person underneath. Lyrically, the song opens on "black lies" layered under a "bright smile," painting a world where appearances matter more than authenticity, and the more the protagonist hides, the more their real self quietly disappears.
