@dershpiel: Israel is coming to a near complete stop for Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day, as millions begin roughly 25 hours of fasting, prayer and reflection. Flights at Ben Gurion Airport stop, Israel’s airspace closes, trains and buses shut down, businesses close and major highways become almost completely empty. Driving is widely avoided except for emergency vehicles. Even the media largely goes quiet. Major Israeli news outlets and broadcasters scale back or stop regular coverage for the holiday. The Times of Israel, for example, announced that its news coverage would resume only after the fast ends. Yom Kippur is the most sacred day of the Jewish year, centered on fasting, prayer, repentance and forgiveness. For roughly 25 hours, one of the busiest countries in the Middle East becomes unusually silent as normal daily life pauses and millions focus on the holiest day in Judaism.
