Best part: we still call modern refridgerators 'yakhchal'. We pronounce it Yakhe-chaal, with the 'kh' pounced with the 'khe' letter that is the rasp, back of the throat noise that is famous in middle eastern languanges.

With global warming I think we will see ideas like this make a comeback for cooling cities, towns, personal backyards. I’ve been looking into how India uses terracotta that is wetted to keep homes cool. They have been using this method for hundreds if not thousands of years.

this just made me realize why we still call modern day refrigerator Yakhchal in Iran. Yankh means ice and chal means well as in water well so the whole word means ice well! that's so dang cool!!!
