So I’m a conspiracy theorist for being curious about this, but Yale has a whole collection. Okay. Yale’s Beinecke library holds the Mellon Collection of Alchemy and the Occult. One of its scrolls describes making the philosopher’s stone, a substance people believed could turn ordinary metals into gold and prolong life. Then there’s the Ars notoria. Yale has a copy from around 1225, full of prayers, strange names and diagrams meant to help someone gain knowledge through ritual. Thomas Aquinas, a major Catholic theologian, condemned that practice as “unlawful and futile.” Centuries later, there it is in a university collection. Even Isaac Newton’s alchemy reading notes are there. Yes, the gravity guy. And these books didn’t just appear at Yale. Mary Mellon collected alchemical works after becoming interested in psychologist Carl Jung. Her husband Paul kept building the collection after she died and donated it in 1965. So yes, I’m interested in who gets to label this stuff knowledge, superstition or heresy. I’ve barely started on the Vatican, which hosted scientists in 2009 to discuss whether life exists beyond Earth. I want to read what these people actually wrote. I want to know why a practice was condemned, who kept its books, and how those books ended up where they are now. If your entire response is “conspiracy theorist,” you haven’t answered any of that.
