At dawn I will conquer! There are nights when you promise yourself: tomorrow will be different, tomorrow I will win. That's the promise Limmie Pulliam throws in the final cry of this aria — Vincerò, I will conquer. It's not a plea. It's certainty shouted before you have any certainty at all. Listen to how he holds that note longer than needed — his entire body betting on it. The industry decided early that this body had no place on stage. At 22, he stopped singing. He spent nearly a decade without letting his voice out — not even in the car, with the radio on. A decade when the promise stayed locked away, with no audience to hear it. He came back. In December 2022, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut at 46 years old — the first Black tenor to sing Radamès in that house's history. Twenty-four years separated the rejection from the debut. On June 20, 2024, on an outdoor stage in Jackie Robinson Park, he sang this Vincerò again — and this time with the whole audience listening. One year, ten months, and twenty-nine days later, he died in Houston, at age 50. He had sung Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the Dallas Symphony two days before. The cry that closes this aria asked no one's permission — not after twenty-four years of silence, and not now, when it's what remains of him.
