Da’Vion Tatum :
I took a course with the late great Dr. Paul Farmer my freshman year at Harvard! GenEd 1093: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Cares. No one could have imagined at that time, but this ended up being Dr. Farmer’s last time teaching this course before he passed in Rwanda. He, and this course, was such a huge inspiration to me and helped me hone my passion for health and social justice 🙏🏾 He has inspired and will forever inspire generations

We all should have Paul Farmer in our lives, mine was not a physician, but I called her Momma ❤️she would be so proud of all of us!

“Not that I have made it here, but that you are still here with me.” This is beautiful. This is why we become physicians and then stay good doctors. I hope application season treats you so well.

Dr Farmer was one of my attendings in the SICU at BWH in Boston many years ago during my residency. What a privilege to have known and learned from him. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I never met him, but reading Mountains Beyond Mountains in undergrad was one of the things that truly inspired me to pursue medicine and public health. This video made me feel the exact same way you described hearing about the IR doc and the cars 🥺 Thank you so so much for sharing, and good luck with interview season! 🫶🏻💕

As someone who goes to the med school where he went to and built his career, I’m acutely aware of the honor and pleasure it is. I get to interact with people who were on his team and even got to meet his co-founder, Dr Kim. Truly so grateful. It’s easy to see the profound impact he left on you and I have no doubt you’ll carry the torch forward. All the best 🫶

I wrote a piece during my first clinical of nursing school after constant pressure to be better, do better, when I was trying my hardest. We had to do reflective journals and I submitted mine, saying “I cannot promise to have all the answers, but I can promise to see every patient as human. And that patient didn’t need a nurse that day, he needed a hand to hold and sometimes understanding the difference is the biggest challenge of all”. She read it aloud, anonymously, the next day and said “this is what it’s all about”.

His last day here wasn’t when he passed, it is when he is thought of a final time. Keep him in your heart and in your medical practice ♥️

I worked in Oncology and worked closely with our medical director, he was so good with his patients and his staff. He kind of breaks the ice sometimes if it’s appropriate to ask his patients or anyone really what their childhood was like. Most patients especially the older ones loved to talk about their childhood if it was good I guess and their faces would light up, and during a long cancer journey they enjoyed the playful break. He would end the conversation by lightly pounding on his own chest on top of his heart and say never lose the kid inside.” I’ll never forget that!
