But what if the real problem starts much closer to the body? Capsular-level strength is about creating tension from deep within the joint, giving the larger joints the stability they need to handle load properly. Think about a pickleball swing. Your shoulder should be doing more of the heavy lifting than your elbow. Your elbow should be supported by the shoulder and surrounding structures, rather than being forced to compensate for poor stability higher up. When that system breaks down, the smaller joints can start taking more load than they were designed to handle. That can mean discomfort, poor movement patterns, and eventually injury. I learned this the hard way. Before I had kids, I trained handstands for hours a day and eventually progressed to one-arm handstands. At 96 kilos, putting that much load through one shoulder meant my elbow eventually had to take the brunt of it. The lesson applies well beyond handstands. In pickleball, don't just ask,

In pickleball, don't just ask, "𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘩𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳?" Ask: → Is my shoulder stable enough to create the force? → Am I moving from the right joints? → Are my smaller joints compensating for something upstream?
