people dont buy cars for the long haul? never understood the depreciation bit. when I buy a new car, the goal of it is to last as long as possible

No down payment means you’re paying more interest in the long run. Also, putting money down proactively cuts back on your negative equity. You’re closer to not being upside down on the loan with a down payment. Every car looses value the minute you drive it off the lot. That’s been the case forever, not just for EVs.
