Para isso, ela usa um sistema de proteção térmica (TPS) composto por aproximadamente 18 mil telhas cerâmicas hexagonais. Essas telhas são o coração do escudo. Cada uma é feita de um material cerâmico extremamente poroso, o que as torna muito leves. Mesmo assim, todo o conjunto adiciona cerca de 7 toneladas à nave. Durante a reentrada, a parte inferior da Starship enfrenta temperaturas que podem ultrapassar 1.400 °C. During re-entry, Starship's underside faces temperatures that can exceed 1,400°C. The tiles are specifically designed to withstand this extreme heat, protecting the stainless steel structure. The hexagonal shape is no accident: it minimizes gaps between the tiles and improves heat distribution.
