Then he grabbed her, pinned her down and put his hand around her throat. Hattie fought back with a knife. But instead of simply walking away, Hattie was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder. She was later convicted of a lesser offense. But she appealed. And eventually, the Florida Supreme Court found Hattie not guilty and ordered her released. A Black woman had fought to defend herself—and her case became part of the legal record of Jim Crow Florida. Why weren’t stories like Hattie’s taught more often?
