i think also therapist at the students counseling center suffer a lot from burn out because my former therapist works in the university and at first she treat me good and do not know what happen but she started to change and at the final session was very tired of me and told me I was annoying. so i blame this to my university for giving her a thousand clients and not given her a break.

I visited mine for a little right before Covid and I was seeing an intern, so they had a little more flexibility. But generally the center said they would only do short-term treatment like 5-9 sessions then refer out if needed

at a counseling center rn for internship and we are truly doing the best we can 😭 and we have lots of clinicians and more resources than most college counseling centers i have personal experience with. but there is just so much more need than we can fill! group and outreach also help us reach more students. every single person i work with is amazing personally and professionally, but there are just so many system flaws and not every counselor is a match for everyone.

at my school i did not like any of the counselors i tried at all but the psychiatrist was amazing. he truthfully saved my life 🙌

I started my counseling journey and finished my associate hours at a UCC. I ABSOLUTELY. Loved it: the clients, the training, the diversity. But I agree, they are so under resourced and generally overwhelmed

Preach. College counseling careers have become similar to community mental health where everyone assumes you won’t stay more than 5 years (unless you are in a Director/leadership role) because it’s such a high burnout set up. I’ve worked in three university counseling centers. I loved the students. The demands from admin compared to the pay made it so unsustainable 😣

The place I went to for undergrad the counseling center was awful. Granted, wasn’t the therapist’s fault, but my experience turned me off from pursuing counseling for a while

I feel like this is also one of those things where you only hear the bad stories. My undergrad counseling center literally saved my life, helped me get my panic attacks under control, and really set me up to be ok once I graduated. Did I still need help after that? Yes, obviously they can’t cure you, but they did good and important work. Buuuuuut on the other end of the spectrum, the university I teach at now has the scariest counseling center I’ve ever seen.
