People confuse sex addiction and hypersexuality like they’re apples and oranges smh

It's scary just how aggressively narratives of p0rn and s3x addiction have a resurface amongst young adults across the board.

I’ve also seen a rise in people saying that masturbation is evil and damages you. Which couldn’t be further from the truth

having a lot of sex doesn’t make you addicted, but with anything, your reason for engaging with that behavior is what’s more harmful then the behavior itself.

Also, not everyone’s “opinion” on the subject is an informed or valuable one. So tread lightly in the comments. :)

Yes!! There are lot of coaches and therapists on social media that push the 🌽 and sx addiction narrative and it’s really concerning. I’ve been talking about the affect this has on people struggling with ppu, sx workers and the lgbtq community for years!

I feel like this is really a semantics issue for most people. Instead of just saying "sex addiction isn't real" it'd actually help more to then explain what the more accurate terms are for what people are talking about when they say "sex addiction". If we don't give people alternative language then they're probably just going to continue using the same term as they were before.

Okay wait I have a serious question. I always thought about sex addiction less as something someone is physically addicted to and rather a dependency. In the fact they highly depend on sex to fill some sort of need, such as simply a dopamine hit, to have some sort of physical comfort and reaching for it in the only easiest way they know, or simply liking the boost in self-esteem they receive. And it reaches a point where that becomes their primary source and it starts hindering their life such as relationships. Or is this not the case??

But don’t they say impulse control is a factor and driver of addiction? Like I know this dude one time that got kicked out of his friend’s house where he was staying for a trip, bc the one rule he gave my friend was don’t bring ppl over to hookup. My friend simply couldn’t help himself and he got caught with some stranger in the house, so his friend kicked them out and they don’t talk anymore. Like if u wouldn’t call that addiction it’s fine but potential impulse control disorder isn’t a better struggle to have imo. There could have been valid reasons for the boundary too beyond “purity culture” like what if somebody had a compromised immune system. There are risks with impulsive behavior still

You are correct. Sex addiction isn't real. Someone might have disordered behaviour that shows up around topics of sex but sex is not the causation of those behaviors, the behaviors would be there one way or another in relation to something else.

as an ex SWer and someone currently working in the field of substance use treatment, this whole post is a crazy overlap of my two fav tops. THANK U. i could speak on this all day, the co-opting of harmful language used against people with SUDs being mapped onto human sexuality has got to be unpacked and thrown out

when you say sex addiction isn't real, are you saying it's not chemically addictive like drugs? As in, would you believe an addiction like food, or social media is a real addiction even though not chemically?

I'm so TIRED of people romantizing and glorifying my purity culture trauma then saying "no that's not what I'm doing!" then will say something extremely puritanical in therapy speech hoping it makes them sound smart while gaslighting PC victims like we don't know that you're saying EXACTLY the same things I heard in church just in a different way
