Happy ‘I Matter Monday!’ You all know Trooper’s story, but did you know he wasn't rescued alone? Trooper was picked up with his companion, an older Belgian mare who we named June. Trooper and June had a unique journey to Gentle Giants: usually, we keep our rescued horses together so they have a familiar face in a new place. But, because Trooper needed emergency surgery, we had to separate them halfway home so June wasn’t standing in a trailer for hours. Trooper stayed on one trailer, bound for the hospital, while June went on another, headed straight to ‘GG.’ She watched Trooper roll away, not knowing if she’d ever see him again. June came to us with a body condition score of 2, emaciated, with extremely dry, itchy and irritated skin. And on top of everything her body was going through, she didn’t know where Trooper had gone. At the same time that June began her intake process here, Trooper underwent his surgery. During his recovery, he wasn't allowed to see mares, meaning they couldn’t see each other until he was cleared. While Trooper healed on one side of the farm, June healed on the other. They were just acres apart. Then, finally, Trooper was cleared to see mares, and their reunion was everything we could have hoped for. June and Trooper spent their first day together attached at the hip, grooming each other and refusing to leave the other’s side. Watching them together, we couldn’t help but wonder if there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye. We have no evidence to support this, but our hearts - and a gut feeling - say that June might be Trooper’s mom. Biological family or not, the two clearly love each other, and we’re grateful they get to begin this new chapter side by side. We can't wait to see what the future holds.
