My grandfather was undiagnosed Bipolar for most of his life. We all knew it was there, but he is an old school Sicilian man and it was incredibly difficult to broach the topic. He finally got diagnosed and treated around 10 years before he was diagnosed with dementia. His bipolar made it incredibly difficult to recognize the symptoms of dementia because they’re so similar. It wasn’t until he started accusing me of stealing from him that, when I brought it up to his psychiatrist, she suggested we get him tested for dementia since that’s a common behavior for the disease. The hurtful things he has said throughout the process have been brutal. I have always been the apple of his eye, and I know that he doesn’t mean the terrible things he’s said...but it’s nearly impossibly to unhear them. It helps when he throws things in that don’t make sense - I had never kept him from talking to anyone, so, hearing things like that made it easier for me to recognize that he wasn’t in his right mind and compartmentalize accordingly. In spite of his anger, I keep going. Because he needs me, and because he’s my dad, and because I love him.
