@eritreantruth: Eritrea is a country where an entire generation has been forced to live without basic freedoms. Eritreans are subjected to indefinite national and military service that can last for years or even decades, with forced labour, extremely low pay, harsh punishment, torture, sexual violence and no real choice over how long they serve. Children can be sent to Sawa before completing their education, while families of people accused of evading national service can also be punished. People are arrested and detained without charges, without a fair trial and sometimes without their families even knowing where they are. Political prisoners, journalists, human rights defenders, religious leaders, government critics and ordinary Eritreans can disappear for years or decades, with some believed to have died in detention. Independent media has been banned since 2001, freedom of speech and expression is severely restricted, there are no independent political parties, no national elections have been held since independence in 1993, and the country has no functioning system of democratic accountability. Religious freedom is heavily restricted, Christians from unrecognized denominations and Jehovah’s Witnesses have been imprisoned, and even members of recognized religions can face government interference and persecution. Prisoners can be held in harsh conditions, including overcrowded facilities and shipping containers, and reports have documented torture, physical abuse, sexual violence and denial of medical care. Eritreans can also face punishment for trying to leave the country without authorization, while those who escape often become refugees and face trafficking, kidnapping, torture, detention, sexual violence and other abuses along dangerous migration routes. Families are separated, children grow up without parents, and countless Eritreans live outside their homeland because they are trying to escape repression. Even outside Eritrea, critics of the government can face intimidation and pressure from Eritrean authorities. This is not just about one problem. It is the loss of freedom, the loss of family, the loss of education, the loss of opportunity and the constant fear of being punished for speaking, worshipping, refusing forced service or simply trying to live freely. Eritreans deserve freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of movement, freedom from forced labour, fair trials, humane treatment, democratic government and the right to live without fear.
